Solve for Speed, Distance or Time

Speed, distance and time are linked by one simple relationship: distance = speed × time. Enter any two values and this calculator finds the third. You can mix units, with speed in mph, km/h or m/s and distance in miles, kilometers or meters, and it converts them for you. It is useful for planning road trips, setting running and cycling paces and solving physics homework.

The Three Formulas

Example: a 270-mile road trip at an average of 60 mph takes 270 ÷ 60 = 4.5 hours (4 hours 30 minutes).

Example: a runner who covers 10 km in 50 minutes (0.833 hours) averages 10 ÷ 0.833 = 12 km/h.

  • Distance = Speed × Time
  • Speed = Distance ÷ Time
  • Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Speed Unit Conversions

  • 1 mph = 1.609 km/h = 0.447 m/s
  • 1 km/h = 0.621 mph = 0.278 m/s
  • 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h = 2.237 mph

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this average speed or instant speed?

It calculates average speed: total distance divided by total time. Your actual speed will vary with traffic, stops and terrain, so actual travel times are often a bit longer.

How do I enter time in minutes?

Convert minutes to hours by dividing by 60. For example, 45 minutes is 0.75 hours and 1 hour 20 minutes is about 1.333 hours.

What is the difference between speed and velocity?

Speed is how fast something moves. Velocity is speed in a specific direction. For everyday travel calculations, speed is what you need.
