Find Your Ideal Body Weight
There is no single "perfect" weight, so this ideal weight calculator compares four well-known formulas side by side: Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi. It also shows their average and a healthy weight range based on a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height. Enter your sex and height in metric or imperial units.
The Four Ideal Weight Formulas
Each formula starts with a base weight at 5 feet (152.4 cm) and adds a set amount for every inch above that:
- Devine (1974): men 50 kg + 2.3 kg/inch; women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/inch. Widely used in medicine for drug dosing.
- Robinson (1983): men 52 kg + 1.9 kg/inch; women 49 kg + 1.7 kg/inch.
- Miller (1983): men 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg/inch; women 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg/inch.
- Hamwi (1964): men 48 kg + 2.7 kg/inch; women 45.4 kg + 2.2 kg/inch.
Example
For a man who is 5 feet 10 inches (10 inches over 5 feet): Devine gives 73 kg, Robinson 71 kg, Miller 70.3 kg and Hamwi 75 kg. The average of about 72 kg (159 lb) is a reasonable target, and the healthy BMI range for that height is roughly 58–79 kg.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
None is perfect. They were created for different purposes and do not consider muscle mass or body frame. Looking at the range across all four formulas, along with the BMI range, is more useful than relying on one number.
Does ideal weight depend on age?
These formulas do not include age. Many experts consider a slightly higher weight acceptable for older adults, so talk with your doctor about the right target for you.
Are these formulas accurate for people under 5 feet tall?
They are less reliable below 5 feet because they were designed around a 5-foot base height. For shorter adults, the healthy BMI range shown by the calculator is a better guide.
