Square Footage Formulas
Example: an 18 × 14 ft living room (252 sq ft) plus a 12 × 10 ft kitchen (120 sq ft) totals 372 square feet, which is about 34.56 square meters or 41.33 square yards. At $4.50 per square foot for flooring, materials would cost about $1,674.
- Rectangle or square: length × width.
- Circle: π × (diameter ÷ 2)².
- Triangle: base × height ÷ 2.
- Odd-shaped rooms: split the space into rectangles and triangles, calculate each, then add them up.
- 1 square foot = 0.0929 square meters. 1 square yard = 9 square feet. 1 acre = 43,560 square feet.
Measuring Tips
- Measure wall to wall at floor level and round up to the nearest inch.
- Convert inches to feet by dividing by 12 (for example, 8 ft 6 in = 8.5 ft), or switch the unit to inches.
